The full-scale war launched by Russia against Ukraine has caused massive destruction of infrastructure and residential buildings. As a result, enormous amounts of construction waste have accumulated, requiring urgent and proper management. Concrete rubble, bricks, glass, metal scraps, remains of construction structures, and even hazardous materials pose a serious threat to the environment and public health.
What Makes This Waste Dangerous?Construction waste generated during armed conflict may include:
debris from destroyed buildings;
remnants of explosive substances;
toxic materials;
mixed fragments of plastic, metal, and glass;
contaminated substances harmful to soil and water.
In addition to physical pollution, such waste often contains components that are hazardous to human health and may cause allergies, respiratory issues, or even cancer with prolonged exposure.
Why Is This Important?This issue goes far beyond aesthetic or logistical concerns. Without proper sorting and treatment, construction debris can lead to:
contamination of soil and groundwater;
disruption of natural ecosystems;
loss of safe land use opportunities;
complications in infrastructure recovery efforts.
What Can Be Done?It is crucial to establish a comprehensive construction waste management system, which includes:
setting up temporary storage and sorting facilities for debris;
using mobile units for initial waste processing;
reusing suitable materials (e.g., crushed stone, concrete, bricks) in reconstruction;
supporting local initiatives and encouraging public participation in waste sorting.
Opportunities and ChallengesOrganizing proper waste management during wartime is a complex task due to:
damaged transport infrastructure;
lack of equipment and qualified personnel;
risks associated with hazardous materials;
limited financial resources.
Nevertheless, there is also significant potential — the use of recycled materials can play a key role in Ukraine’s sustainable recovery.
Why Act Now?Delays in developing an effective waste processing and disposal system will only deepen the environmental crisis and increase health risks. Public engagement, state support, and the application of international expertise are crucial to overcoming this challenge.
